Bob achieved a lifelong ambition when he played cricket on the main ground at Lord's to celebrate the Lord's Taverners Diamond Jubilee. A six-team 8-a-side tournament included such cricketing legends as Mike Gatting and John Emburey along with film director Sam Mendes. Bob had retired from village cricket in September where he had skippered the Sunday 1st XI for many years. Consequently he had not picked up a cricket ball since then. It showed in his first over which went for 25 and cost his side the game. Two games later he bowled again. With his third ball he beat the bat of Sam Mendes and the batsmen ran a bye. The next three balls all beat the beat with the last one producing a stumping. "If that is the last ball I ever bowl" said Bob "I'll always be able to say with my last ball I took a wicket at Lord's!"

Ten years ago at the Golden Jubilee of the Lord's Taverners he did a poem, entitled "The Duke and I", gently teasing the Duke of Edinburgh for never recognising me. Now ten years on he was back at St James's Palace for the Diamond Jubilee where he produced another. "The Duke and I - the Sequel". Click here to read it. At the end of the evening the Duke responded and, rejecting "the Cat's" request for a lift home, produced a one verse poem for "Cat Bevan" which stated that his cab was too small and that there was not enough room to swing a cat!
